Got a great email from a parent today with some great questions and just wanted to share!
Q: Are you licensed with the DFPS?
A: We have done our research and I have personally talked to a DFPS agent regarding licensing requirements and I was told that because we are only two-day-per-week, they wouldn't regulate us even if we begged them to...That said, we are using the DFPS's Minimum Standards for Childcare Homes as a guide for our home setup.
Q: Are you a Childcare Home or Center?
A: Though we are not regulated by DFPS, if we were we'd be classified as a Childcare Home, because we do in fact operate out of our home, rather than a separate location. From the DFPS's perspective, Childcare Homes fall into 3 categories: Licensed, Registered and Listed Childcare Homes - depending on how many kiddos are enrolled. The Minimum Standards for Childcare Homes outline these regulations as well as appropriate age group ratios, etc.
Q: Do you have limits for children of each age group? Are they separated by age?
A: From the DFPS's perspective, the age group buckets (for a Licensed Child Care Home) are: Birth through 17 months, 18 months to 3 years, 4 years+ years...We don't accept children under 18 months or older than 6 (they can be 5 and going in to first grade, but no older) into our program, so for us specifically, if we were required to operate as a Licensed Child Care Home, we would be allowed no more than 8 kiddos (18mo - 3yrs) + 4 kiddos (4-6yrs) per a single caregiver.
We are limiting our enrollment for any given session to 12 kiddos max with no more than 8 under 3 yrs old, and have 2-3 caregivers on site at any given time. Though we are not required by law to do this, it makes sense, given the size of our space and the level of attention and interaction we want the kiddos to be able to get from us. We will not be separating the kiddos by age other than quiet time (and potentially circle time, if it makes sense - depends on who is enrolled). Our daily routine is posted here :-)
Q: What if I want to visit?
A: Great! As part of the application process, we are ALWAYS available for phone calls, face-time meetings/tours or in-home tours at your convenience! We will also have Open House hours on the 3rd and 4th Wednesdays of the Session for parents and kiddos to come check us out a play for a bit. We understand that Splitter Splat is not for everyone and want everyone to be 100% comfortable with the care their child is getting while with us. If you are looking for a more traditional Child Care Center, then we are definitely NOT for you!
