Summers in Austin Texas can be hot. REALLY hot. The good news is, there are plenty of things you can do to ensure that everyone is able to be fun and safe while still enjoying the outdoors:
Water (drinking) - Making sure there's always a large jug full of ice water & cups outside for the kiddos to hydrate throughout the day is a must! In addition to responding to requests, be sure to actively encourage them to drink throughout the day and discuss the importance of taking care of their bodies by drinking water. Consider setting a timer or alarm for "5-minute drink breaks" at the top of each hour that they are out in the heat.
Hats & Bandannas
Hats are a great way to prevent sunburn and stay cool - make sure you choose a hat that is comfortable, gives your kiddo plenty of coverage, made of a breathable material and preferably a light color. If your kiddos hate hats (like mine do) another great option is a gel-filled bandanna or a plain bandanna soaked in cool water. I've found that letting them pick the color and writing their name on it with a sharpie makes them more likely to stay on!
Well-timed Indoor Time
Incorporate indoor lunch time and/or afternoon nap or quiet time in your daily routine during the heat of the day. Having a little down time in the cool of the indoors is important both physically and mentally (for everyone!). See an example of a daily routine here.
That's it for now! We hope everyone has a great, safe summer filled with lots of new adventures outside!
