The Story
How'd You Do That?
- Fluorescent straws
- Hand-held LED black light flashlight (we used this one)
- Dental floss
- Paper clip or bamboo skewer with a notch on one end
DIRECTIONS:
- Cut straws into segments – you can make them as short or as long as you like.
- Make a makeshift "needle" to help pull the thread through the straw beads. Unbend a paperclip, twisting a loop on one end for the floss. If you are using a bamboo skewer, use scissors to create a notch on one end so the floss doesn't fall off.
- Loop a piece of dental floss through your paper clip "needle" or tie it to the end of your bamboo "needle".
- String your beads on to the floss with the needle. Don't forget to secure the other end of the floss so the beads don't fall off! (An important point when you are 4 yrs old!)
- Once you are done with your design, tie it off and voila! Wait for night to come, pull out your black light flashlight and watch them GLOW!
Tips & Tricks
- Don’t limit yourself to bracelets and necklaces! We tried geometric shapes like triangular prisms and stars!
- I like adding a string or loop to geometric shapes for easy carrying on a walk or hanging up outside in the wind! "A" carried her pyramid "lantern" while we walked along the beach last night - she loved it!
- If you are making your jewelry or shape and realize you’ve cut the floss to short, don’t worry! Just tie the end to another piece of floss and keep going – the knot will be inside the straw so no one will see it anyways!
- When making geometric shapes, tie the floss every so often to maintain the tension in the shape...otherwise it gets a little frustrating when the slack causes the shape to sag and trying to tighten it after you've strung a bunch of pieces can sometimes be hard!

My heart is breaking for the families affected by this heinous act of violence. Over the next few days, we'll all be hugging our babies and loved ones just a little tighter and a little longer. I'm also filled with anger over why we live in a world where other people are capable and willing to hurt one another in this way. The mama bear in me wants to scream at the top of my lungs, "HEY A$$HOLE! MY KIDS HAVE TO LIVE IN THIS WORLD! CUT THAT S#!T OUT. NOW!!"
So I decided to post today anyways, because in moments of fear, sadness and anger, I know that we could all do with a little reminder of how strong we really are (and must be).
Love,
Angela

The Story
"No sweat!" I said to myself, determined to find an excuse to cut a pool noodle in half with a large knife. "PING PONG BALLS! That's perfect!" I exclaimed in another awesome Eureka! moment.
ANOTHER GREAT IDEA, right? Wrong. Turns out the groove still isn't deep enough to prevent the ping pong ball from going "off the rails" at even the slightest turn or dip. Wink winkety wonk!
"Fine. I'll just raid the Choke Bottle for the super obvious - marbles and micro machines. How are we going to keep track of all those things outside? Ugh." I thought.
ENTER little M's Mom. I love B. She is awesome - she's laid back, creative and definitely knows how to think outside the box. After hearing about what was planned for today, she said "HOW ABOUT ICE!?" GENIUS. Thank you B!
How'd You Do That?
- Cheap/old pool noodles
- Bowl of Ice
- (Optional) Painters tape or duct tape
INSTRUCTIONS
- Cut a noodle(s) in half.
- Throw the noodle(s), a roll of tape, and a bowl of ice out in the backyard.
- Lock door and walk away*. (OPTIONAL)
*OK obviously just joking about that one...hehe
Tips & Tricks
- The ice cubes that look like a crescent work great when you put the round side down like a tiny sled!
- Get the inside of the noodle wet before you start - it will help the ice slide smoother :-)
- Add some food coloring to the ice for an extra special touch!
- Let your kids brainstorm other things to send down the luges - paint, pebbles, micro machines, marbles, ping pong balls (if you noodle is large enough!). Let them guess which they think will go down faster and then race 'em to find out!
- You can also just do water (or colored water) - kids love watching pretty much anything go down the slide...
